When you hear the name La Révolution, you are thinking History and therefore the ideals, the rebels, the church and the democracy, the protests, the violence and all of what you have read and probably even watched on screen. This story, while being set against such a backdrop, is instead a testimony of sorts, told by a girl named Madeleine, which she begins right after she – as a masked horseman is seen chasing and then beheading a man. Why was this man beheaded so?
The tale kicks off with quite a few minor plots that come together over time. The count of Montargis has been away from home for a while. His daughter, Countess Elise and her little sister Madeleine are left to be under the care of her uncle Charles. Also in the picture is their crippled cousin who is always seen withering in pain. While the family and the other nobles live their lives of luxury, the peasants and villagers are plagued by poverty and the more recent worry that involves cases of poor girls disappearing mysteriously.
The body of one such girl is found and a Black foreigner is arrested as he has been accused of being the cannibal who had allegedly killed her. Yet another part of the story features a young doctor called Joseph who is aware of the existence of a rare disease that has been spreading in secret. Joseph is also appointed as the doctor at the city
